Newborn Maremma puppies with mother

Welcome to the world!

On a chilly winter morning, 9 puppies made their grand entrance into the world! Three males and six females! (Born January 2024)

Our Goals

Our puppies were born in working dog conditions out in the goat barn. We experienced unseasonably cold conditions in Tennessee, so the puppies were given supplemental heat in their whelping pen until they could regulate their body temperatures. We believe their first sensory development begins among their livestock. The first sounds, sights, and smells will be among the goats, barn cats, and poultry.

Their location in the barn is the first step in LGD training! We want the bond to livestock to start at an early age.

As they mature, under the careful eye of their dam, they will have supervised visits among the various livestock.

We will observe and monitor the LGD developments in each puppy to ensure they go to the right farm! Each has a unique personality and traits, and we are excited to discover what each puppy is capable of

As the puppies get older, they will learn the ropes of what it takes to be an LGD under the watchful eye of our other Maremma LGDs. Each of our Maremmas has its own way of guarding. Our LGDs work different pastures & may not all guard the same livestock at the same time.

Puppy Health Goals Under Our Care

  • Our puppies will be dewormed at 2,3,4,6,8,10, and 12 weeks
  • Puppies will receive their first vaccinations at 6-weeks-old and continue the veterinarian-recommended vaccination schedule appropriate for our region
  • Puppies will start the veterinarian-recommended schedule for flea and heartworm-preventative
  • Veterinarian Health Wellness Exams
  • Microchipped
  • Puppy-formulated food and introduction to harvested meats
  • Baths, Nails, Grooming, and more! We believe in starting them young and getting the puppies used to general hygiene.

Puppies have begun to open their eyes!

  • Our puppies started opening their eyes at 12 days old on January 24th
  • Here's a picture from January 25, 2024
  • Ceres keeps digging burrows, so the puppy's cute fluffy white fur now looks cream. A little dirt don't hurt!

Puppies first vet visit was exciting!!!

  • Our puppies went to their first vet appointment on February 24th
  • The vet & vet techs carefully examined each of the nine puppies
  • They received their first round of vaccines, confirmed all clean fecals, and all received their microchips
  • We practiced biosecurity by transporting them in this nifty mobile pet mobile. Parvo prevention is a big rule we follow.
  • While the puppies are in our care, the puppies have a vet visit for each round of vaccines, and examinations each time to ensure the puppies are healthy. We prefer a veterinarian professional to administer all vaccinations.

Learning how to be a great LGD

  • Our puppies have graduated from the whelp pen. The whelp pen was located in our goat barn, and the puppies became accustomed to farm sights & sounds.
  • They have been gaining more access to areas of the farm.
  • Under the farm owner's careful supervision, the puppies explore goat pastures. We felt the exposure to dry yearling Nubian does would provide a good learning opportunity on how to interact with the goats.
  • The puppies get numerous opportunities to explore as a pack, one-on-one, and in small groups. We want them to be confident in their jobs as guardians.
  • Their dam, Ceres, has been the primary adult guardian in the pastures. It is beautiful to watch her teach the pups manners around the yearling does.

  • We have enjoyed every part of the process of raising the best-EVER pups
  • Our philosophy is to better the Maremma breed and ensure that these puppies will have successful lifelong jobs at farms nationwide.
  • Our role doesn't stop at raising these pups. We provide life-long mentorship to their new farm owners.
  • Life happens, and circumstances change. If one of our pups finds themselves out of a job or farm, we guarantee to take back the puppy at any point in its life. Part of bringing these pups into this world is promising them they will always be able to return home and that we love them no matter what.

Welcome

If you are interested in learning more or would like to purchase a puppy, please get in touch with us. These are working dogs and are NOT pets. If you are looking for a companion pet Maremma, then we are not the farm to contact. We believe that Maremma's fail to thrive cooped up in apartments or postage-stamp suburban communities. As with every breed, exceptions exist, but we place puppies where they will thrive as an LGD.
